Color & Contour Slimline Card For a Friend

Color & Contour Slimline Card For a Friend

When you want to make a card, but you can’t think of an idea, just look in the Stampin’ Up! Catalog for inspiration! That’s what I needed to do to come up with a card recently and the catalog didn’t disappoint. This Color & Contour Slimline Card For a Friend is the result. I may have practically just opened the catalog to a random page or just paged through a little bit before finding this sample card on page 96. Something is bound to catch your eye when you do this! Maybe it will be a color, stamp set, or card design that gives you an idea. You never know. And oftentimes, I start out with one idea or copy one idea and end up with something completely different. This time I stuck pretty much to the sample I was copying.

First of all, this is a “slimline” card, kind of a new trend, a change from the normal size card we make. I cut a 6″ x 6″ piece of Basic White Thick Cardstock and scored it at 3″ so that the card base would be 3″ x 6″. Next, I tried to copy the scalloped edge that goes partly down the card front on a diagonal. There is a scalloped edge die in the Scalloped Contours Dies. I think I used the correct one but I think my dies got mixed up and this one was with another set of dies. (This is why it would be a good idea to scan the set of dies when you get them before you take them off the paper, so you know exactly what goes with each set!)

I just cut out a piece of Basic White cardstock that would fit on the front of the card and laid this scalloped die diagonally where I wanted it, looking at the sample in the catalog. I didn’t want it to start in the top right-hand corner, but come down a bit before the scallops started. And I wanted it to stop before it got to the bottom of the card.

The pinkish paper you see on the catalog sample and on my card is from the Hues of Happiness Designer Series Paper. It’s on the “other side” of one of the beautiful floral papers so it is difficult to use! The design on this side of the paper has other colors, too, so you may need to cut the exact section you want of the paper. You can even cut it shorter than 6″, just so it will fit under the scalloped piece when it is glued down.

The Balmy Blue flower from the Color & Contour Stamp Set is stamped directly on the white scalloped piece along with some of the leaves in the same stamp set. Then I stamped the Melon Mambo flower and the So Saffron flower on scrap paper and die cut those. These flowers are all two-step stamping and I will say it is difficult to line up the stamp design and it’s difficult to line up the die on the stamped flower. The die is easier, though! However, since the flowers are sort of an abstract design anyway, it doesn’t matter so much if you get the two-step stamping perfect! I colored in the leaves and the flower centers with Stampin’ Blends markers.

The greeting on the sample is on Balmy Blue cardstock and embossed in white with a partial greeting from the Color & Contour Stamp Set, but I chose the “friend” greeting from the Happiness Abounds Stamp Set. First I die cut the small scalloped rectangle in the Scalloped Contours Dies in Balmy Blue but I thought that looked like “too much” so I used the scalloped edge die in the Painted Label Dies for something light. I put my greeting near the bottom of the card since I didn’t make my card quite as wide as the sample. You could also add some gems to the card and I may go back and do that. Sometimes I forget before I take the photo for my blog!

Here’s another slimline card I made a little while back on my blog.

With a brand new Stampin’ Up! catalog, there are many, many untapped new samples to try out! Copy or just get some ideas when you look in the catalog. I hope you will try a card, maybe a slimline card like this Color & Contour Slimline Card For a Friend.

Beautifully Penned Floral Tag Card

Beautifully Penned Floral Tag Card

You won’t believe where this Beautifully Penned Floral Tag Card came from! I opened the package of Beautifully Penned Paper that I got free during Sale-A-Bration on my recent order which is all black and white in design. I saw this design with the squiggly lines and I immediately thought it looked like a fun paper to use!

My first inclination was to color in between all the lines! But that might have taken a while so I pulled out different Stampin’ Blends and just drew ON the lines in between the lines! Sometimes I used the brush tip and sometimes the bullet tip, but I think the bullet tip is a little easier. I decided it did not have to be perfect. In fact, since the curves are irregular, your hand doesn’t get into a set pattern after coloring a few lines so each one is different. This paper is only available during Sale-A-Bration through September and coordinates with the Hand-Penned Designer Series Paper in the Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog. You will find this Beautifully Penned 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper on page 7 of the Sale-A-Bration Brochure.

This paper with its black and white designs is perfect for coloring using various techniques! You can color with markers, Watercolor Pencils, Blender Pen and Ink, pastels, or Blending Brushes. Or just leave it as is and have a black and white card or add a splash of color by adding some colorful flowers or other designs. Just play!

This card has a card base of Polished Pink. Black would have been interesting, too, or a layer of black on the pink under the designer paper. Or vice versa. The tag is die-cut from the Tailor Made Tags Dies. The flowers are stamped with the Color & Contour Stamp Set and cut out with the Scalloped Contours Dies. The leaves I stamped and cut out by hand. The flowers are two-step stamping but the stamps don’t line up perfectly so don’t knock yourself out trying! The tag is popped up on Stampin’ Dimensionals as is the pink flower. I had a third flower stamped and die cut but I thought the tag would be too crowded with it, so I added a Basic White layer inside the card and adhered the third flower to the inside of the card! It’s fun to decorate the inside of cards. We should really do it more often!

These are the colors I used in Stampin’ Blends markers and also the ink. These colors are in order starting from the top of the card: Poppy Parade, Daffodil Delight, Granny Apple Green, Polished Pink, Pool Party, and Flirty Flamingo.

The greeting is also in the Color & Contour Stamp Set, stamped in Polished Pink ink. And to finish the card, I added a bow tied with the Polished Pink 3/8″ Open Weave Ribbon. All of these new In Color ribbons are so pretty! I just love the style!

With every $50 you spend during Sale-A-Bration, you can choose a FREE product in the Sale-A-Bration Brochure. This Beautifully Penned Paper is available with a $50 purchase! What is better than free paper?!

Color & Contour Pattern Party Card

Color & Contour Pattern Party Card

Once again, as I looked through the Pattern Party package of designer papers, this Flirty Flamingo stripe jumped out at me and screamed to be made into a card which resulted in this Color & Contour Pattern Party Card. I had almost forgotten this set of dies has this scalloped edge die in it which just helps to make this card! I love how this card turned out!

The card base is Flirty Flamingo Cardstock. The striped paper is from the Host Product in the new Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog. This means that with an order of $150 or more, instead of choosing some other free merchandise in the catalog, you can go to the back of the catalog where there is this designer paper option (48 sheets!) and some other stamp sets, all that you can choose as your Stampin’ Rewards at a discounted price. I think this package of paper is going to be a hit because it’s something different (just stamp sets have been offered as Host Rewards) and you will love the paper patterns! Look for the Pattern Party Designer Series Paper on page 171.

The striped paper is die cut with a die in the Scalloped Contours Dies. You can purchase the Color & Contour Stamp Set and the dies in a Bundle and save 10%. I love the stitched look along the scalloped edge. Whether you purchase the stamp set or not, I would buy the Scalloped Contours Dies by themselves. They are that good!

I do have the Color & Contour Stamp Set and I do like the flowers in the set! You can do two-step stamping to color in rather abstractly the flowers, or you can color in the open design yourself with whatever coloring technique you like. Then you can cut them out with the dies. You can set on the set that the individual leaf has a very open design, but I just stamped it in Memento Ink, colored in with two colors of green Stampin’ Blends, and cut out the leaf itself, not the extra squiggle! The lower flower is popped up on Stampin’ Dimensionals and the other two and the leaves adhered right to the card. The flower center is stamped with Daffodil Delight Ink.

It IS a little tricky to line up the two-step stamp with the first stamped impression and then to line up the die with the flower. You could spend some time lining them up and then put a black mark on the stamp and on the die to remind you of how to line them up. But since the design is rather abstract anyway, it kind of doesn’t have to be perfect. For some of us, though, who like things “perfectly lined up”, well, we can fiddle with it and we can get it lined up!

The greeting is in the stamp set but I did use another set of dies to cut out the greeting. I used the Stitched So Sweetly Dies to get a smaller rectangle to fit at the bottom of my card. This is another set of dies that I have used a lot and recommend you have in your supplies!

Not one to leave well enough alone, I saw the “speckle” stamp in the set and thought maybe it would look interesting in the bottom portion of the card. Usually it is not a good idea to stamp something more on a card that is nearly finished and could potentially be ruined if you mess up, but I took a chance and it worked out! I inked the stamp with Flirty Flamingo Ink but stamped off before stamping on the bottom of the card.

On the inside of the card, I put a piece of Basic White for a layer and stamped one of the flowers, just the outline, in Flirty Flamingo Ink down in the right-hand corner. Later I can stamp a message on the inside of the card or write a personal note.

If you have a large order of $150 or more, remember that you can choose Stampin’ Rewards of 10% or more and remember that there are special Host choices in the back of the catalog, one being this year the Pattern Party Designer Series Paper. This is 48 sheets, 4 sheets each of 12 different designs. This card, the Color & Contour Pattern Party Card, shows off one of the pretty patterns in this package of paper! You will enjoy it I’m sure!
