My Digital Studio makes it easy to make up a scrapbook page to commemorate a special event, such as when we get snow in Houston, TX!  

It snowed like crazy all day yesterday, and at our house we probably had an inch of snow. I think our big tree in the front yard kept the snow from falling on most of the yard.  So in the end, the big snow doesn't really look like much, especially if you are from somewhere up north!  But for Houston, it was quite the excitement!  The temperature even dropped to 26 degrees last night so this morning it was real wintery weather!  The car had to be started early to warm up, the ice scraped off the windows, and just to make it real, three of the four car doors were frozen shut!  Although we were lucky the roads had a little bit of time to dry before the freeze hit and that the road crews had had time to prepare, there still were a few icy spots, enough to cause a few accidents this morning.  

However, we were not kept from getting our son downtown to his appointed exam at 8:00 AM…luckily!  We could have worried that he would get sick with the flu on this date or that we would have so much rain the streets would be flooding, but we NEVER would have guessed that we would worry about SNOWY ICY ROADS!

It was way too brief, but at least she was on there!!  Shelli Gardner, Cofounder and CEO of Stampin' Up!, appeared on the TODAY Show this morning for Stampin' Up!'s donation of stamping and papercrafting supplies to the Holiday Toy and Gift Drive.  Unfortunately, she had to share the spot with another contributor, and obviously the TODAY Show did not appreciate the talent and star power of Shelli Gardner!!  They really need to invite her back for a papercrafting segment on the show and find out what a spectacular person and company they had in their midst with Shelli and Stampin' Up!

It’s REALLY Snowing in Houston, TX!!!

The weather forecast was right!  The morning started out with rain and in a few hours you could see some snowflakes mixed in!  In another little while it was really coming down but not sticking.  About five minutes later after taking photos outside, it was sticking to the ground!  Just snowing to beat the band, as they used to say!!  And big flakes!  My son and I went out to do a couple of errands and everyone was so excited about the snow!  This may not seem like much but it is a BIG DEAL here in Houston!  Supposedly it will get even colder tonight with possibly more snow!  Here are some photos:

Shelli Gardner on the TODAY SHOW….Fri. Dec.4th!!! Be Sure to Watch!!

Shelli Gardner will appear on NBC's TODAY Show on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009!  They say she will be on during the fourth hour of the show (the 10 AM hour on the East Coast).  Just to be safe, you probably better watch the whole show!!  :)   Stampin' Up! contributes to many charitable organizations worldwide, and since 2005 has been participating in the TODAY Show's Annual Holiday Toy and Gift Drive.  This year Stampin' Up! will be donating over $150,000 worth of stamping and paper crafting products.  You can read about Stampin' Up!'s charitable efforts HERE.

You can see the boxes of stamping supplies being packed for the donation HERE on Shelli's blog! She's planning to make gifts to take to the TODAY Show cast as well!  I wonder if they will appreciate how special they are!

This will be a very exciting event for all of Stampin' Up! and we can't wait to see Shelli on the TODAY Show tomorrow!  Hope you can watch!

It Might Snow….in Houston, TX!!!

Amazingly, the forecast for Houston tomorrow is for SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!  Now it might not ACTUALLY snow, but to even have mention of snow in Houston is beyond spectacular!  It even has been pretty chilly here the last couple of days, jacket weather if you're going to be outside for more than a few minutes, so it makes a forecast of snow a little bit believable.  Today the sun is shining but yesterday it was very cloudy at times, which made me feel like it could snow. Now the snow might not be any more than a few flakes falling as the rain changes to snow….or it might even be a couple of inches, some computer models say!  But two flakes would be exciting down here in the tropics!  Thus, I was inspired to make this card with one of my favorite stamp sets, Big on Christmas (#116578).  I used Soft Suede for the card base, Real Red for layers, and the beautiful Christmas Cocoa Specialty Designer Series Paper (#116770) in the Holiday Mini.  The snowflake is made with the Jumbo Snowflake Punch (#116628) with a very small Clear Rhinestone Brad (#113144) in the center.  For a little extra dazzle I drew on some icicles with the Tombow Multi Purpose Adhesive and then sprinkled with the White Chunky Essentials Stampin' Glitter (#108797).

CHRISTMAS DECOR ELEMENTS BLOCKS

These were so fun to make!  I was surprised how large these blocks were…3" x 3" x 3".  Just order the Decor Elements Blocks (Set of 4) #116829 in the Holiday Mini.  Yes, I ordered two sets so I could decorate five blocks!  I'll use the extras for another project!  I used Tombow Multipurpose Glue to cover the blocks with Designer Paper from the Christmas Jingle Simply Scrappin' Kit #115696.  Then you just decorate all 4 sides (not the tops or bottoms, unless you make them very flat!) with other elements in the kit or anything else you want to put on them!  Once you get started you will find you become very creative!  You could do less decorating and attach photos to the blocks as well.  Wouldn't these make terrific Christmas gifts?!

And after the holidays, decorate more for any season or home decor!

Thanksgiving Nugget Turkeys

Aren't these the cutest guys for Thanksgiving?!  The idea was in our Stampin' Up! demonstrator magazine (I've mentioned before how we all can't WAIT to get it in the mail every month!), Stampin' Success, last October.  I added the Hershey's Nugget candy wrapped in our Autumn Traditions Designer Series Paper.  First I thought I would put the turkey feathers at the back of the nugget but I like them right behind the turkey.  Then the nugget makes a good stand for the turkey and would great at each place setting of your Thanksgiving table!  See directions below.

Here are the easy directions for the turkey feathers.  You can use either Designer Series Paper (DSP) or card stock.  The DSP is easier to fold since it is thinner.

  • Punch three scallop circles with the Scallop Circle Punch.
  • On each scallop circle, count five scallops and fold that area down. (Count 5 scallops, draw a real or imaginary line from the edge of scallop 1 to the edge of scallop 5 and fold down on that line.)
  • Now fold the scallop in half to form a crease in the middle for reference, then unfold.
  • Fold the flat edge of the scallop circle down from each side so the folded edges line up with the middle crease on the scallop circle. (You're bringing the flat ends up to the center fold line to get the shape you see on the turkey below.)

To complete the turkey, you'll need some punches.

  • 1 3/8" circle for the body
  • 3/4" circle for the head
  • Two 1/4" circles for the buttons (punch is retired)
  • Boho Blossoms Punch for the feet, cutting off one petal from one of the flowers for his little beak!

Color in two black dots for the eyes.

Cut a 3/4" square for the hat.  Trim off a little strip for the hat brim.  Perhaps trim a bit more to make the hat the right size.

It's really very easy and you can put your own custom touch to the project.  Or just make the turkey without the nugget and adhere him to the front of a Thanksgiving card or bag!

Quick and Easy Paper Christmas Ornament

This tutorial is on Splitcoaststampers here and is pretty quick and easy to make.  Some of you might have made something larger last year, either a ball or a pumpkin, but on a smaller scale (and doubled!) you can do an ornament!  How cute would this be to hang on a gift bag as an extra little present?!  You need a hat pin from the Stampin' Up! Pretties Kit and one or more of the beads or pearls and some ribbon….plus the Designer Series Paper of your choice!  The one I used is Holiday Lounge.  You'll enjoy making it.  Just keep holding those strips of paper down on the pin so they don't go flying off!

Unfortunately, my ornament isn't hanging on anything but you get the idea!  It's fairly small and cute!  You should be able to click on the photos and enlarge them.  The one on the right shows how the ribbon just hooks into the top of the hat pin and you can see the beads at the bottom.  You could use one less and have your ball shaped a little differently or add a pearl or a colored bead of your choice….or one at the top if you put it on first!  Have fun!

12×12 Scrapbook Pages

I was asked to make a 12×12 layout to be added to a scrapbook for a retiring teacher.  I wanted to make a simple enough design for the teachers and staff to have room for lots of photos or good wishes or memorabilia.  After mulling over lots of ideas, this is what I came up with.  I used the star from Nursery Necessities (really a baby set but I have gotten lots of uses out of this set for other than baby!) and also the Star Punch.  The Big Shot Scallop Envelope in the corner will be good for one more little photo or some journaling.  The "Memories" page can either be filled with photos or good wishes or remembrances from the staff.  Again I used the Big Shot and the Billboard Alphabet to cut out the letters.

Christmas Tile Magnet

Here's an oldie but goodie, although I don't think I'd ever done it this way before.  It's a tile magnet, one of the little 2"x 2" tiles that come all attached to each other in a sheet.  I'm sure I bought them at one of the home improvement stores a long time ago.  I would assume they still sell them but I don't know for sure.  They're not the super-slick ceramic ones.  To separate the tiles from the others I just used a good household scissors and then kept slicing away at the little stubs of adhesive until they weren't visible from the front.  Maybe you could use a hobby knife.

Now you could just stamp on the tile with Stazon ink, but somehow I had stamping on tissue paper in my head.

  • Cut a piece of tissue paper 1 3/4" x 1 3/4".
  • Stamp on tissue paper with Black Stazon and color in however you want.  I used a blender pen and Stampin' Write markers.  This Christmas tree is from Fun & Fast Notes.
  • Apply Versamark ink directly to the front of the time generously and then sprinkle with Glassy Glaze Enamel (#100477), dumping off excess, just like glitter.  Heat with the Heat Tool (#100005) to melt Glassy Glaze.  This seemed to take awhile for the Heat Tool to get hot enough and probably because the tile is a little cool but you will see when the Glassy Glaze really melts completely.
  • Very carefully apply your stamped tissue paper piece to the top of the tile. Don't burn your fingers!  I pressed it down a little harder with a wadded up paper napkin.
  • Apply Versamark ink directly to the tile again and repeat with Glassy Glaze and heat.
  • Do that one more time!
  • Attach a strong little magnet to the back of the time.

You can barely see the bit of shine from the glaze on the top of the tile, but it is there.  You could even wrap a piece of grosgrain ribbon all around the sides of the tile if you wanted.
