Easter Treats

A few more Easter projects!

EnvBasketChick

Had to make another "envelope basket" like in this post, but I was ready for something different than bunnies, as cute as they are!  I got this chick idea from Mercedes Weber on Splitcoast….not sure I made it exactly like hers but it served the purpose.  I stamped the envelope with one of the "Wow Flowers" and added a little grass at the bottom with a piece of textured Kiwi Kiss paper.  The chick is punched from the large oval punch for the body, the Scallop Circle punch cut for the wings, and flowers from the Boho Blossoms punch for pieces of the feet and top of head.  I just drew in his eyes with a black marker (always add a little white twinkle of sorts with a gel pen for eyes to make them come alive!) and cut a little orange triangle for his beak.

And one more envelope basket….

EnvBasketLamb

This punched lamb is inspired by MariLynn on Splitcoast.  Again, I wasn't exactly sure how hers was made but this is close.  It's just fun to play with the punches!  The body is the Scallop Circle punch, the legs the Word Window Punch, the ears part of the 5-Petal Flower Punch.  The face is just drawn on.

Easter Boxes Instead of Baskets?

Easterboxes

How about a little Easter box filled with candy?  This is what I made for my nephews to send for Easter.  Of course when you are mailing things, you are a little limited in size, so I decided to use the new Big Shot BigzXL Box #2 die to make these cute little boxes.  I chose the two In Colors, Tangerine Tango and Pacific Point, plus Kraft for the cardstock for the boxes.  These boxes are so easy with the Big Shot…..all you need is some Sticky Strip or Tombow Multi glue on one tab to make your box….the rest just goes together!  Stamp the little chick from "A Good Egg" and you just about have it!

Big Shot Basket and Blooms Easter Basket

We all know we can use the Basket and Blooms die to make round baskets and very cute ones.  Naturally, some creative demos saw that you can also make rectangular baskets with this Basket and Blooms die!  Here is my project using the basket part attached to some strips of cardstock.  I think you can vary the size to suit your project purpose.

Easterbasketpinkfront

To decorate the front, I cut another basket shape out of Baja Blue, trimmed the bottom, and then used my new Eyelet Border Punch to punch the bottom border.  The flowers are from "Flower Fusion Too", a fun collection of three colors of felt flowers.  I used the Rhinestone brads to hold the flowers together and glue dots to attach to the basket.

Pinkbasketback

Here is the back side.

And filled with Easter treats!

Big Shot Scallop Envelope Easter Basket

Looking for some small Easter treats to give as gifts or to mail?  If you have the Big Shot, you have so many possibilities!  And it doesn't take long to make something very cute!  In this project, I used the Scallop Envelope die and glued four of the envelopes together into a basket.  You can either leave it plain like that, or for a little extra strength or design, wrap some designer paper around your basket.  In this project, I used the beautiful new Parisian Breeze Specialty DSP which already has some extra weight to the paper.  Just put the bottom together by alternating the flaps (like you might on a box) and make yourself a handle.  I secured the handle with the new "Flower Assortment" brads on each side of the basket.  I used the oval punches to make the Easter eggs on the front.

Easter Big Shot Pillow Box

Love the Big Shot and all the cute things you can make with it!  Last night I used the Pillow Box die to make this little candy holder.  I made one with the new Medium Weight Window Sheets and it did work, but I felt that this particular project which needs a  little "mooshing" of the ends to close properly works a little better using a thinner transparency sheet.  Paper would really be easier than any window sheets, but the clear sure is cute when you get it made!  I used Mini Glue Dots and hid them with the belly band and the ribbon.  That's the secret to using adhesives on Window Sheets….just use something else to cover.  This bunny stamp is from the new set in the Occasions Mini "Eight Great Greetings" and it really is a versatile set!  I just colored in the bunny with our Stampin' Write Markers and used the circle punches plus the fabulous Scallop Circle Punch.

Easter Nugget Tin Candy Box….a Cute Easter Gift!

I just LOVE making these nugget tins!  They really are just rectangular tins but got the name nugget tins because Hershey's Nuggets chocolates fit so well inside and are so easy to decorate!

NuggetBoxChick

You can choose your "flavor" of Nuggets by what color paper you want showing….gold or silver!  Just cut 1" x 3" strips of Designer Paper and adhere to your nugget.  I like to put just a dab on SNAIL in the middle of the strip to hold it on to the candy and then either a mini glue dot or the Tombow Multi Glue (hold it for just a second until it sticks) as it wraps around the nugget.  Twelve nuggets fit in the box with a little room to spare.  Then you can get really creative!  I usually make a belly band by just wrapping some cardstock and/or Designer Paper around the tin.  Here I have used the DSP from Sale-A-Bration but of course you can use anything you like.  I stamped the chick from "A Good Egg", punched it with the 1 1/4" circle punch, layered on a 1 3/8" circle punch and then layered that on the Scallop Circle Punch.  I used the SU White Gel Pen to put the little dots on the scallops just for some extra fun!

Happy Easter Week!

Crafting in This Day and Economy

Here is an excerpt of an article about crafting and the economy that I found interesting:

Crafting: A Silver Lining In A Tough Economy

by Laura Tiffany, Entrepreneur.com

In economic times like these, the urge to hunker down in your house, limit spending and jump off the merry-go-round of shopping, credit and consumerism can be strong. And one way for people to step outside the system, if just for a few hours a week, is crafting. Rather than being a consumer, a crafter becomes a manufacturer; the end result of a night on the couch isn’t three hours of empty Tivo space, but a scarf, toy or handmade holiday ornament that one can give away, keep or sell.

While data are still being compiled for 2008, the Craft and Hobby Association reported that in 2007, craft sales in 39 categories reached nearly $32 billion, and nearly 57 percent of U.S. households engage in crafting. Online handmade goods site Etsy.com reported $88 million in sales in 2008, a significant increase over 2007 sales of $26 million. With 1.9 million members and more than 200,000 sellers, Etsy enjoyed $9.9 million in sales in January alone.

Like most retail sectors, it’s likely that craft sales may decrease in the coming months. But all signs point to more and more people diving into this market, both as consumers of supplies and handmade gifts, and as entrepreneurs selling their own items and supplies.

At the January CHA show, spirits were high as manufacturers and retailers recognized that the economic climate creates more folks ready to put needle to fabric and stamp to paper to join a crafting revolution that’s been in the works for more than a decade.

Some of the big crafting trends present at the show, which featured more than 900 exhibitors, include:

  • Scrapbooking. This is the most robust craft category that CHA tracks, and scrapbooking companies had by far the strongest presence at the show. While paper still rules scrapbookers’ supply cabinets, many crafters are taking skills such as stamping, painting and decoupage into other media for jewelry making–like sandwiching tiny art between glass slides for a pendant or stamping blank wooden bangles.
  • Crafts for kids. Kid-specific kits and products are hotter than ever, even in this tough economy. “Unfortunately, the schools cut a lot of creative areas, so it’s up to the parents to do it at home. And I really think [crafts have] become an important part of the American family,” says Jenny Lowe, design director of Moorestown, N.J.-based Sbar’s Inc., a 50-year-old supplier of family-friendly crafts that has lived through its share of recessions. “Kids are just so eager to accomplish something. And let’s face it–crafting gets them away from the computer.”

Some companies foresee growth in this area because of parents wanting to craft with their kids. Parents can purchase a $15 kit and have a fun evening at home, rather than pay $50 to take the family to the movies. There are also ancillary customers, such as church camps and Scout troops. And of course, there’s always the need for kids’ birthday gifts, too.

Tough times tend to spur creativity. As an entrepreneur, there are few better ways to channel your creativity than in a crafts business. Whether you start to find your artistic voice or you do it to sell personalized gifts, crafting makes the most out of your creativity–as an artist and as an entrepreneur.

Simple Friendship Butterfly Card

 ButterflySC221

It's spring and that means it is time for butterflies……or "fooflies" as our daughter used to say!  Stampin' Up! offers several stamp sets with butterflies right now and they certainly are the "in" thing!  This butterfly is from the stamp set "Simple Friendship" on page 92 of the Idea Book & Catalog .  I got the idea for this card on SCS and it was from a sketch challenge, a diagram of a layout.  I used Baja Breeze for the card base since it coordinates with the beautiful new Designer Paper in the Occasions Mini called "Walk in the Park" on page 9.  I almost hated to cover up the design of the paper on the bottom layer, but I can always make another card showcasing that paper!  This card is 6×6 since the person I was making it for wanted a large card that a group of people could sign (therefore you would cut your cardbase 12×6 and fold in half).  The ribbon is a new one in the Idea Book & Catalog, on page 179, the Whisper White Organza Ribbon.  It is so beautiful to use!  But if you wanted a new ribbon from the Occasions Mini, you could use the Whisper White Satin Ribbon in there on page 17!  The words stamped under the butterfly are from another butterfly set called "Flight of the Butterfly" (page 98).  My butterfly is stamped and cut out and the little half pearl is from the Pretties Kit, adhered with a mini glue dot.

Easter Envelope Basket

This is a really easy and fun project, I think.  I used one of our lovely Stampin' Up! envelopes to make this.  I think once you get used to the smooth feel of our Stampin' Up! envelopes, you really don't like any other kind!  This is the Whisper White Medium Envelope (#107301).  All you do is seal the envelope, stamp it (I used a stamp from Priceless), and then use the Large Tag Punch on the sides.  Just slide the Tag Punch down as far as it will go along the side, with the envelope flap vertical, and punch.  You'll have a little piece left at the top, which you can punch off with the tag punch or just cut off with a scissor.  There will also be little triangle pieces on each side from the Tag Punch, but just cut those off with a scissor.  Stick your hand inside to open it up a little and there you have your basket!  I made the Punch Bunny on the front to decorate and tied a little ribbon.

EasterEnvelopeBasketBack

EasterEnvelopeBasket

The pink inside of the bunny's ear is bent forward a little bit, I think really his whole ear is slightly bent forward!  I just used markers to hand draw his eyes, nose and whiskers.  Very easy!  To make some grass inside, just cut very narrow strips of scrap cardstock and crimp with the Crimper on page 192 of the Idea Book & Catalog.

Happy Easter Bunny Pail

Recently I helped one of my customers with a luncheon and stamp camp at her church.  This was one of the projects.  She purchased the pails at Oriental Trading.  They are a little less than 3 inches tall and a little over 3 inches in diameter.  Then we used oval punches to make the bunny face and the Trio Flower punch to make the little flowers out of the SAB Designer Paper at the bottom.  Just attach everything to the pail with some glue dots or dimensionals!  We added a little tag from "A Good Egg", punched with the Word Window Punch and tied on with Linen Thread.  Very cute and easy project and the little pail is ready to fill with some grass and  candy treats from the Easter Bunny!  Contact me if you need any more details!

It’s No April Fool’s….

It's no April foolishness……the beautiful new Stampin' Up! Occasions Mini begins today!  While everyone has had a sneak peek recently in order to get those cute Easter sets in time, today is when the new Occasions Mini REALLY starts!  Mini catalogs have really come a long way since I started with Stampin' Up!  Not only does this mini have wonderful new stamp sets, but it also has new Designer Paper (Walk in the Park), new ribbon (Whisper White Satin), new Corduroy Buttons (Baja Breeze and Basic Gray…and yes, they really are covered in corduroy!), new Rub-Ons (Summer Love), a NEW PUNCH (Scallop Oval…you'll want to add this to your collection!!), Window Sheets (printed and plain), new Designer Hardware (Grommets!), new wheels, and….. (drumroll, please!)…..the new Matchbox Bigz XL Die!!!  This die that of course works with the Big Shot cuts a very cute little box and lid plus three tags!  There is also a matching stamp set, Matchbox Messages, that you can use with this die.  And with the new Window Sheets, you can make clear lids or matchboxes.  Lots of creative possibilities with this die!

Look at my project below and then click on the Occasions Mini picture above right to view the catalog.  If you didn't receive your mini in the mail, contact me with your mailing address and I will send you one.

Here is a little box I made!  Four Hershey Nuggets fit perfectly inside.  You can cover them with Designer Paper to decorate.  I used my Scallop Circle Punch to punch the lid and put a clear Window Sheet piece under it.

I stamped the box with the flowers from "A Good Egg".

And just a little tag from the new "Matchbox Messages" to tie on to finish the box!  Cute little gift!

Houston Azaleas to Stamp By

While I catch up with getting some other photos ready to post on my blog, I thought I would share some photos I took in my very own yard of our beautiful azaleas and some bluebonnets.  This is a follow-up to the Azalea Trail and card of a couple weeks ago!  I took these photos the other day before the rains came and I'm glad I did because the azalea blooms are about over now.  Maybe these pretty flowers will inspire you to get out a nice flower stamp set and stamp something for spring!

My Houston Azalea Trail Card

AzaleaCard

Last weekend was the annual Azalea Trail in Houston put on by the River Oaks Garden Club.  This is one thing my husband and I have done every year that we have lived here except one!  We love seeing the beautiful gardens and houses and basically seeing how the other half lives!  We were excited that the four houses on the trail this year were new ones to us.  There were other places on the trail as well, but we just did the four homes and gardens.  One pool house was more beautiful than our house!  Wow!  And the azaleas were starting to bloom pretty nicely, even the ones in our own yard.  Some years they have not been quite ready for the Azalea Trail.  Just driving around the River Oaks area with its beautiful homes and yards was a treat in itself on such a pretty day.

So from the azaleas, I was inspired to make this card!  Not sure that these flowers are azaleas, but they kind of look like them.  This is the new Fifth Avenue Floral stamp set.  I stamped, watercolored, and cut out the three "azaleas".  On the background I stamped that same flower plus another one in the set and watercolored lightly to provide a background.

We have bluebonnets blooming in the backyard already so spring must be right around the corner!

If you need some stamps to make some spring flower cards, be sure to check out the online catalog at my website and click the Shop Now button!  I used the Aquapainter and just refills and inkpads to color in the flowers.  So easy!

An Easter Surprise Card

While there are lots of creative Stampin' Up! demonstrators out there, you don't have to be creative yourself to be a demonstrator!  This card is an example.  I followed the directions in our demonstrator Stampin' Success Magazine….ask any demo….probably one of the best parts of being a demo is receiving this great magazine once a month from Stampin' Up!  So many cute ideas for cards, scrapbook pages and other fun projects as well as business tips from other top demonstrators in the company.  All I did on this card was change the image they used to my "A Good Egg" chick!  It's not a card that opens the normal way, but rather the top half flips up (due to the mini brad on the side holding the pieces together so that they are moveable) to reveal the sentiment.

If you want more specific directions on how to make this card, just email me.

If you want to get the great Stampin' Success Magazine, just sign up on my website (to become a demo!)!  The Starter Kit is even on sale!  And you get a free stamp set as well!

Recruits
During Sale-A-Bration, anyone who joins as a demonstrator can choose any stamp set—a value of up to $47.95—from the current Idea Book & Catalog! Plus, new recruits get 15% off the Starter Kit—over $350 of Stampin’ Up! products and business supplies for only $169!
