Pop Up Birthday Card

Lots of days I can have or see hundreds of ideas for cards and  stamping projects I want to make, but sometimes when I need a card for someone special it’s like I’ve never stamped before and can’t think of a thing to make.  Does that ever happen to you?! Sometimes I can look around in all the usual inspirational places and not see anything I like, just because I NEED something right then.

Cards for guys always seem a little harder to come up with, although they really shouldn’t be. Often it’s just a matter of changing the color or the paper or using less bling or more texture. Anyway, when I needed a card for my son for his birthday I found this one at StampingSchool.com. I used the “You’re Amazing” greeting on the front of the card from the stamp set You’re Amazing and used the Big Shot and the Apothecary Accents Framelit to cut it out. Love, love, love the little Candy Dots and the Candy Dot Brad Bases (or the Candy Dots by themselves!). While the sample I was copying used a more feminine designer series paper, I changed it to our current Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper.

Pop Up Birthday Card Inside

The inside of the card is a pop-up!  And it’s made the old-fashioned way, with two little strips of paper making a box shape on each side of the card hidden by a front panel that you can then add things to so that it pops up. I copied the sample pretty closely except for the greeting and the designer paper. Then if you like you can stick a gift card, check or cash in that opening or even engineer it to have a pocket, or any other design along the pop up portion!

This was a good male birthday card to make.  It could be for anyone, but the Sweater Weather Designer Paper makes it look like fall and more masculine.  With a whole pack of paper, you can choose any of the patterns and know they will look good together because Stampin’ Up! has done all the work of coordinating colors and patterns.  And did I mention that I love the Candy Dots??!!!

When is daylight savings time? Change your alarm clock, and all your clocks, tonight when you go to bed….unless you are up around 2 am and want to change your clocks then! Spring forward an hour in the spring…..that's the easy way to remember which way the clock goes for daylight savings time! It's hard to get up an hour earlier, but at least we will have more sun and sunshine and longer days.

Don't forget to check your smoke alarm batteries tonight too!  It's a good way to remember to do it, to tie it in with changing your clocks for daylight savings time.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a big deal here in Houston and it is about to begin! Actually the World Championship BBQ Contest is going on now for three days and the Carnival has opened. Next week the actual rodeo and livestock show will open along with a musical act at the end of the rodeo each night. 

Houston really gears up for the rodeo! I made this card in My Digital Studio, starting with a design for a baby card! I just changed out the colors, one star, one button, and added a greeting. My Digital Studio is an easy way to design your own projects either using the templates that come with the program or designing completely on your own.

It's here!  The big day for football, Super Bowl XLVII! Whether you're going to a Super Bowl party, having a Super Bowl party, or just have your own football pictures you'd like to scrapbook, here's an easy idea for a football scrapbook page layout and design! This page was made quickly in Stampin' Up!'s digital software program called My Digital Studio! I just chose a template that was already made up, deleted a few words, added my own football terms and footballs, and it's ready to go! If I had my own football players in the family I could put their photos in the photo boxes from my computer.  If I wanted to add photos of friends at a Super Bowl party, it's easy to do that.  If I wanted to make a page the traditional way, I can plan it on My Digital Studio first, then make it with ink, paper, and stamps. If I wanted to print out this page minus the pennants, I could do that, then cut my own pennants from designer paper and adhere them to the page.  Lots of choices with My Digital Studio!

Special holidays call for special table settings and decorating your Thanksgiving table is probably one of the biggest ones!  Sara Brook, of the Stampin' Up! My Digital Studio Team, put together this lovely place setting made with the Unknown Blessings Ensemble. It comes with everything you need to make these table decorations and really sounds easy!  Just use the digital feathers, filling in with whatever color paper you want, print, cut out and snip to look like feathers.  We all made Indian headbands in school I'm sure…just print out the headband, size correctly and add some feathers. The napkin rings are made the same way, just smaller! There's even a pie box to print and make, frameable art, menu cards, place cards….and whatever else you can think up using this digital set!

A College Graduation Swatchbook from My Digital Studio

MDS Swatchbook Cover

I  may have mentioned before that I was working on a swatchbook in My Digital Studio, the Stampin' Up! digital papercrafting software, of my son's graduation photos. Finally I remembered to take some pictures of the swatchbook all made up! You can see there is a plastic cover on the front and back of the book and the whole thing is held together by the rivet in the corner. It is small….only 5 1/2" x 3 1/4", but that's why it is so cute and fun!  And don't think the small size kept me from squeezing in as many photos as I could! I have a hard time leaving out any photos because I think each one is valuable in its own way!

The MDS Swatchbook just swings open. It has 26 pages to design. So I kept my pages in order skipping every other page because those then would be the backsides of the front pages. If that is a hard concept to wrap your head around, as it was for me, make a little swatchbook out of scrap paper and label your pages so you know what you are doing! When you start doing the backsides of the pages then you are working from the end to the front….so page 2 (the last page in your series) is on the back of page 1. It's confusing to explain even though it is very simple! And if you are not putting pages in order, then it doesn't matter anyway!

And printing prices for My Digital Studio have recently been reduced!  You CAN print any MDS projects yourself or at another printing company, but if you do it through Stampin' Up! you are assured of a quality product and precise Stampin' Up! colors. Start with the Swatchbook Template on My Digital Studio and make some cute little swatchbooks for Christmas gifts with those digital photos just sitting on your computer! I recommend purchasing MDS 2+ to get the most bang for your buck! You can get the software and "some" content with just MDS 2 for less money but the full version has SOOOO much content it really can't be beat!  But you do have choices, so whatever works for you….including just doing the Free 30-Day Trial!  No risk, and you can purchase downloads you want, print projects you make…everything….all during the trial period.  If you really want the hard discs, those are coming out soon! I recommend the download, though, so you can get it instantly and always have access to it.

One thing I love about My Digital Studio is the ability to create something for any occasion….even Election Day! It's hard to believe it is finally Tuesday, November 6, 2012…Election Day in the USA! Although there are lots of candidates and proposals to vote on in most precincts across the country, the Presidential election is what most people are focused on today and every four years. No matter what, we all need to exercise our right to vote today….unless, of course, you have already voted early! It is our duty and obligation as American citizens to visit the voting booth and cast our ballot in the best interests of our community, state and country.
