Rose Wonder Watercolor Card

Rose Wonder Watercolor Card

I got a big box of Stampin’ Up! goodies yesterday and barely knew which stamp set or product to start playing with, but this Rose Wonder Photopolymer Stamp Set won out! I decided to make a very easy card with the pretty Shimmery White Cardstock.  Shimmery White holds up to watercoloring better than regular cardstock, and I had this idea to just watercolor on the paper first and stamp second. I used my Aqua Painter and several ink refills:  Old Olive, Pear Pizzazz, Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight and Pool Party. I did kind of see where the stamp was going to go on the card front and approximately watercolored in those area, but not with any exact placement.

An easy way to watercolor with ink refills is to place a DROP of ink on a clear block or on top of a stamp case, then use the Aqua Painter to dilute and swirl and pick up the ink.  Then just wipe it off with a paper towel or napkin when you are finished with that color. A stamp case or block is usually right there so easy to use! Of course you can also use the inside of the ink pad lid.  Lots of ways to do it!

After watercoloring the Shimmery White (or you could certainly use watercolor paper), I used the Heat Tool to dry it completely. I stamped the flower and greeting in Jet Black Stazon InkAnd then for a little pizzazz (and of course for the fun of playing with my new product!) I had to add some highlights with my new Gold Wink of Stella Glitter Brush. Once you start playing with the Wink of Stella Glitter Brushes it’s pretty hard to stop!

I may play around with this card some more and take it from simple to a little “more”. We’ll see!

Easy Valentine Candy Jar

Easy Valentine Candy Jar

I saw this idea for an easy Valentine candy jar in an online feature from Country Living and I had to try it since it looked so easy!  All you need is a doily of some kind, a heart, and some Baker’s Twine or similar! I used just a dab of SNAIL Adhesive to hold the doily in place and the heart while I wrapped the Cherry Cobbler Baker’s Twine around and around the jar. And then the best part – filling the jar with Valentine candy!! Give it fora  Valentine gift or keep it for yourself!

Paper Pumpkin January 2016 by Stampin’ Up!

Don’t look if you haven’t received or opened your Stampin’ Up! Paper Pumpkin Kit yet!

Mine is still unopened in the box, but it was a busy week and I think this weekend might be a good time for some Paper Pumpkin time! Don’t delay too long with your kit as there is a time factor involved! And I have to remind myself of this, too — you can use the stamp set that comes in the kit for other stamping projects! I often use it for the kit project and then put it away!  I missed out on using the greetings in one kit on other cards for a holiday because I just didn’t think about it!  Some people store their photopolymer Paper Pumpkin stamps in the Project Life by Stampin’ Up! Photo Pocket Pages and then in an album for easy access. I think I need to get organized and do that!

OK, so if you are still reading then you probably want to see what the Stampin’ Up! January 2016 Paper Pumpkin Kit is all about!  Here is the Stampin’ Up! video that shows how to put the kit together. Keep in mind, with each kit you can follow the directions….or not!  Sometimes you can make part of the kit as they describe and then make alternate projects with the remainder of the pieces.  It just depends. Each month’s  kit is different! And I love that Stampin’ Up! provides a video to watch, if you want, for each kit. So besides reading the directions, you can also watch how to make the kit.

If you would like to receive a Paper Pumpkin Kit in your mailbox once a month (or whenever you choose), the best deal right now during Stampin’ Up!’s Sale-A-Bration promotion is to order the 3-Month Prepaid Subscription and save $5. This will qualify you for a free Sale-A-Bration item from the Sale-A-Bration Brochure! I recommend adding some other products to your order because you will be paying the normal $6.95 minimum Stampin’ Up! shipping for your free SAB item. Might as well get some adhesive and Paper Snips or ribbon or cardstock along with it to make the shipping worthwhile! That’s my opinion anyway!

When you order before the 10th of any month, you will receive that month’s kit!  So order before February 10th and get the February kit.  Order later in February and you will receive the March kit.  Whatever you prefer.  Once you have subscribed, if you want to pause (or, heaven forbid, cancel!) your subscription, just do it before the 10th of the month because Paper Pumpkin starts shipping out around the middle of the month.

You can order extras for gifts! On the prepaid kits, you will receive an email from Stampin’ Up! telling you have to set up and activate your account with a special code.

If you prefer, there is still the monthly subscription HERE.

Either way, I think you will really enjoy the thrill of getting that Paper Pumpkin box in your mail every month!  And who doesn’t need some “happy mail” once a month!

Bloomin’ Heart Thinlit Valentine Card

Bloomin' Heart Thinlit Valentine Card

The Shimmery White Cardstock is wonderful to use on a card like this Bloomin’ Heart Thinlit Valentine Card. Not only is it beautiful in and of itself with its subtle shimmer, but it works well for watercoloring. Not that I started this card thinking of watercoloring!  I just wanted to make the beautiful Bloomin’ Heart die cut with the Shimmery White cardstock. Then I decided to color in the little die cut flowers that come with the heart, and after that thought I would color the leaves on the heart die cut. That led to coloring the flowers too, doing it all very loosely, not trying to get every single shape colored exactly correctly and perfectly.  I used my Aqua Painter and ink in the lids of my ink pads:  Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, Bermuda Bay, Old Olive, Tangerine Tango.  The Shimmery White cardstock holds up well to watercoloring like this, better than just Whisper White.

Bloomin' Heart Thinlit Coloring

After coloring the heart and making sure it was dry (you can use the Heat Tool to quickly dry the watercoloring), I used the new Fine-Tip Glue Pen to apply glue to many of the tiny spaces on the back of this heart. If you don’t have this Fine-Tip Glue Pen in your arsenal, I really suggest you add it to your next order! I adhered it to a card base of Soft Sky cardstock. Next I adhered the die cut flowers to the heart and added Rhinestone Jewels for some bling!

The banner at the bottom of the card is a stamp in the coordinating stamp set, Bloomin’ Love Photopolymer Stamp Set as well as the words.  I cut it out the banner by hand with Paper Snips.

Bloomin' Heart Thinlit Closeup

This Bloomin’ Heart Thinlit Die is just beautiful and can be used for more than Valentine’s Day. It cut out well with the Precision Base Plate by Stampin’ Up! I rolled it forward and back so that it went through the Big Shot three times. Then if you take the die with the paper inside and lay it on the foam and roll with the Big Shot Die Brushalmost all the little pieces some out and the die cut shape pops out easily.  You still probably have to poke out a few pieces with the Paper Piercing Tool or something similar.

If you would like to save 15%, purchase the Bloomin’ Love Photopolymer Bundle and get both the Bloomin’ Heart Thinlit Dies and the Bloomin’ Love Photopolymer Stamp Set.

Kraft Corrugated Red Foil Glimmer Valentine

Kraft Corrugated Red Foil Glimmer Valentine

I didn’t really know what to title this valentine, so I titled it with everything:  Kraft Corrugated Red Foil Glimmer Valentine! I sort of copied my own valentine creation from last week when I was making some sample valentines for the valentines two moms and I made for their kids’ classes. But today, as I was looking for some current designer paper to use, I spied this Kraft Corrugated Paper on my table. Sometimes no matter what you THINK you are going to make, you might get inspiration and a different idea from something else you see. So I just decided to mix textures and looks with kraft textured paper, sparkly glimmer paper, and shiny red foil paper!

The card is a square 4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ base of Whisper White, and layered with Red Foil Sheets pieces, Silver Glimmer Paper,  and the Kraft Corrugated Paper (which also has white corrugated sheets in the package!). I used three punches:  1″ Square Punch, the Postage Stamp Punch (retired), and the heart punch in the Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack. For a little embellishment, I tied a thread pulled from the 1 1/4″ Burlap Ribbon around the heart. And the greeting is from the popular stamp set in the Occasions Catalog, Bloomin’ Love.

If you are interested in Stampin’ Up! products and you don’t already have a Demonstrator, contact me and I can send you the new Occasions Catalog and Sale-A-Bration Brochure! Just email me at Karen@KarenStamps.com.

Try using different textures and materials to make your valentines and see what you come up with! It’s time to be thinking about Valentines!

Bloomin’ Love Small Glimmer Hearts Valentine

Bloomin' Love Small Glimmer Hearts Valentine

This Bloomin’ Love Small Glimmer Hearts Valentine is fun to make with our beautiful Glimmer Paper! But what if you want some colored glimmer hearts?  It’s easy to color the Silver or Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper.

To make these little colored hearts, I cut a strip of Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper into a strip and then colored areas of the paper the colors I wanted to use. To color the paper, I used a bit of ink refill in the lid of the ink pad (or whatever ink was already there – you can squeeze the lid before you open the ink pad and if it is juicy enough, you will have a little puddle of ink in the lid). I used my Aqua Painter, one of my most useful tools in my opinion, to pick up some ink and paint it onto the glimmer paper. You could also use Sponge Daubers if you have those.

You can make the color pretty dark because it will be lighter when it dries. And I found that it needed a blast with the Heat Tool to really get it dry. Maybe that is related to how much ink you put on the paper or the colors you use.

For this card, since I wanted hearts, I punched some little hearts with the heart punch in the Itty Bitty Accents Punch PackI adhered each one with two Glue Dots.  The Valentine greeting is from the Bloomin’ Love Photopolymer Stamp Set.  I think we too easily just focus on the pretty heart stamp in that set, but take a good look at ALL the stamps in that set you will see words, flowers, a pretty banner, and a few others. Almost all of them, except maybe the greeting I used on this card, can be used for other occasions, even just general use.

Here is what my glimmer paper coloring looked like!

Birthday Card with Stars

Birthday Card with Stars

You never know what card design you might come up with from scraps on your desk, such as this Birthday Card with Stars. In order to make space for our Christmas tree, we have to move a desk to another room. This desk is where I heap lots of stamping stuff, not where I actually stamp. The Christmas tree has been down for a little while but we haven’t moved the furniture back where it belongs. Yesterday I was putting designer papers back in their packages which were in a holder (or not!) on this desk, when something tipped over, which knocked my ribbon storage things off the back of the desk with ribbon rolls going everywhere underneath the desk. Even when I tried to catch things and straighten everything back up, there was another domino effect with more stuff going crashing everywhere. It was almost funny except for the mess it was making! So I guess I need to do some major tidying up on that desk when we move it back!

But in the process of the little bit of tidying up I found all these stars I had already cut out with the Stars Framelits Dies so I decided to just go ahead and make a card with some of them! I placed the stars around on the card, adhered them, and then added a greeting from Remembering Your Birthday. I even decorated the inside a little bit with a couple small stars.

And here are the current Stampin’ Up! Weekly Deals, out today until Monday, January 25.

Stampin' UP! Weekly Deals Jan 19 2016

One exciting product on the Weekly Deals is the Party Punch Pack, which is in the new Occasions Catalog on page 4. If my math is correct, if you want the Party Punch Pack along with the coordinating stamp set Party Wishes, then it is a better deal to purchase the Bundle.  If you just want the punches, then the Weekly Deals discounted price is better.

And of course the other products on the Weekly Deals are all great. I think markers are very useful to have, especially if you don’t own the ink pads.  The Berry Basket Die is fun for lots of projects, and who doesn’t need plenty of buttons on hand for embellishing?!

Even the Weekly Deals count toward Sale-A-Bration, where you get to choose a free Sale-A-Bration item in the brochure with every $50 Stampin’ Up! purchase. Let me know if you have any questions about Sale-A-Bration and the product choices.

Making Class Valentines

Class Valentines 2016

It was such a fun time on Friday night making class valentines with two of my customers/friends for their kids’ classes! Yes, they are really ahead of the game, but since they are both so busy we decided to do it as early as possible. I love looking for ideas for cards so I created a secret board on Pinterest where I could pin anything I came across that I liked. I think only the mummy guy is from the Pinterest board, the other two I came up with after I heard what interests the kids had.

The mummy is from the Googly Ghouls Stamp Set (retired) and I copied this clever idea from Pinterest. I made mine be a small card, 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ square since I had leftover card stock from wedding invitations and thought this would be a great time to use it and save some cutting. Besides small is cuter sometimes! Since it was for a boy’s class, instead of a big red heart I used some Brushed Silver card stock (also retired). I stamped three little red hearts and punched out one small heart. Not sure this guy has one in this photo, but it is extra-cute to adhere a googly eye to the mummy. We forgot to do that at the end, but it’s plenty cute without anyway.

The middle valentine is for a girl who loves horses!  I used the retired stamp set Wanted. Sometimes it pays to keep around old stamp sets although something has to give space-wise sometime soon at my house! But this set is one I would probably keep. Somehow I came up with making a tag with the Scalloped Tag Topper PunchThe background paper on the tag is the woodgrain pattern from a sheet in the Farmers Market Designer Series Paper. We all decided on just a half card size (again, sometimes smaller is cuter!) and I think it’s perfect!

And the third one is for a boy who loves soccer!  I found (again) a retired Stampin’ Up! sports stamp set, never used! But any time now, when I make those scrapbook pages for my boys sports!!!  The grass is made with the Fringe ScissorsAnd the soccer ball is stamped on the card and also punched out and popped up for fun.

So the two moms and I made 75 valentines for 3 classes in a couple of hours. A real team effort! Hopefully the kids will like them, but it was also about us getting together to have some stamping fun! I always say one of the best things about Stampin’ Up! is the people you meet!

Occasions Catalog “Enjoy the Little Things” Project Kit

Enjoy the Little Things Project Kit Photo

I guess there are so many wonderful new things in the Occasions Catalog, that I completely missed this Enjoy the Little Things Project Kit on page 33.  It was only when I read online somewhere about the “easel kit” in the catalog that I went back and looked and found out what this project kit is all about!  And it looks like a cute one!

You get a ton of materials to make 13 display pieces for this nice easel. If you watch the video, you will see (and hear!) that it is very sturdy, almost like a chalkboard, with a gold clip on top, of course. You can change the display piece out as you desire, some are certainly seasonal, but others are not. It all comes in a nice box in which to store the extra pieces while they await their turn on the easel! And if you wanted to make an extra one of these (or more!) for a gift, you have the gift box right there for a nice presentation.

You will want to purchase the stamp set that goes with it, Enjoy the Little Thingswhich you can use in plenty of other projects and cards, it won’t just be for this project kit. In the catalog you will see what other inks and adhesives you will need to make this project.

Watch Brandi in the Stampin’ Up! video below tell you all about the kit and give tips on assembling each display page. It’s fun to watch someone make something, I think, even if you aren’t doing it yourself at the moment!

If you want to order the Enjoy the Little Things Project Kit along with the Enjoy the Little Things Stamp Set, just add on a few more dollars to your Stampin’ Up! order and you will qualify for a FREE Sale-A-Bration product at $50 or more. Remember, you get a free SAB product with EVERY $50 you spend, no limit!

If you are new to Stampin’ Up! or don’t have a Demonstrator that you are working with, I would be happy to send you copies of the catalogs. You can view them online, but, in my opinion, there is nothing like a Stampin’ Up! Catalog in your own hands! Just email me at Karen@KarenStamps.com.

Stampin’ Up! Envelope Punch Board Card Boxes

Envelope Punch Board Card Boxes

I’ve owned the Envelope Punch Board by Stampin’ Up! since it came out, but I had never tried making one of these card boxes.  I was gifting some cards to a couple friends and wanted to give them a nice presentation. I watched some tutorials online to figure out how to make these and then got to work. Once I figured it out, it was easy and I was pleased with the result. You do need 12″ x 12″ paper to make this size which starts with 9″ x 9″ paper – not that I didn’t pull out a regular size piece of cardstock since it was 9″ x 9″ and I didn’t need something as large as 10″ x 10″ or something!  Duh!!  This is a good time to pull out some old designer paper to practice on (I know, I can hear the gasps, but surely you have some old paper and patterns you aren’t that crazy about anymore!).

This is how I made my card box although it may be difficult to understand without a video.

  • Place a 9″ x 9″ piece of paper in the Envelope Punch Board lined up with the 3 1/2″ measurement.  Punch and score. Move the paper over to the 4 1/2″ measurement, punch and score.
  • Turn the paper around to the opposite side and repeat the above directions.
  • Turn the paper to one of the sides that hasn’t been scored and punched. On this side, match up each of the score lines with the guide as you would normally do to make an envelope, punch and score.
  • Turn the paper to the last side and repeat the above directions of lining up the score lines with the guide.
  • Fold lightly on all the score lines to see how your envelope box is going to go together. Making sure it is in a landscape position, determine which flap is the top of the box and, if you want, punch the tip to round using the Envelope Punch Board.
  • Now that you know which side is the top, trim off the tabs from the top flap and cut slits for the bottom to make tabs just to make the bottom a little stronger with the tabs. (See photo)
  • Adhere the flaps to form the box, making sure the box is lined up well.
  • If you want to stamp on the box, do this before putting the box together.

Envelope Punch Board Scoring

Envelope Punch Board Card Box Cuts

Try this and you will probably find making this card box fun to make with the Envelope Punch Board! And any time we can get more use out of our tools and products, it’s a good thing!

Honeycomb Happiness Ice Cream Cone Card

Honeycomb Happiness Ice Cream Cone Card

Making this Honeycomb Happiness Ice Cream Cone Card sure made me hungry for ice cream! This stamp set is one of the free Sale-A-Bration stamp sets you can earn with a $50 Stampin’ Up! purchase, a special promotion going on right now!

The Honeycomb Happiness Stamp Set on page 15 of the Sale-A-Bration Brochure comes with the ice cream cone, the chick (or bird?), and balloon plus three greetings. I’m sure it is destined to be one of the most popular SAB stamp sets. The little Honeycomb Embellishments (page 9 of the Occasions Catalog) are perfect on each of these images and I intended to put one on the ice cream cone, but I forgot! I had already applied my Wink of Stella Brush to add some glimmer, so I’ll just have to make another ice cream cone card and use one of the honeycombs!

This card base is made with the Thick Whisper White card stockThe ice cream cones on the background are stamped with Soft Sky, Pink Pirouette, and Crumb Cake. The ice cream cone for the focal point is stamped with Stazon Ink and colored in with a Blender Pen and So Saffron and Pink Pirouette Ink. On the greeting for a little oomph I used the Subtles Candy Dots.  Love the Candy Dots!!

Mini Treat Bag Thinlits Birthday Card

Mini Treat Bag Thinlits Birthday Card

You know how I love the Mini Treat Bag Thinlits Dies and here I have made a Mini Treat Bag birthday card using one of the patterns in the English Garden Designer Series Paper collection.  I’m not sure I had noticed this particular pattern before, but it jumped out at me the other day.  I knew it was perfect for this project.  The other side is also nice, wide dark pink stripes, which you can barely see on the inside of the treat bag at the top. For the card part, I just slipped a piece of Whisper White that fit inside and stamped with a greeting from the Amazing Birthday Stamp Set.  I have used the “Happy Happy Happy Happy Birthday to you” greeting over and over again in birthday cards I have made. I attached one of the Mini Metallic Clothespins to the top of the card so it is clear that the recipient needs to pull out that inside card, and to make it stand out I die cut the little bow that comes with the dies and adhered that to the clothespin, along with a small Rhinestone Jewel. Why not?!

The front of the mini treat bag card is pretty simple.  I stamped the banner in the Amazing Birthday Stamp Set and just cut it out by hand. Then I stamped the birthday cake, punched it out, layered it on a larger circle punch, and then mounted it on the Silver Glimmer Paper scallop punch. For a little more pizzazz, I added a piece of the Silver Sequin Trim to dangle.

The Mini Treat Bag Thinlit Die card is perfect for slipping a gift card inside, too, if you like, or folding the top over and adding a belly band.  So many possibilities! And you get lots of pieces in the die package.  I love making cards and other projects with the Mini Treat Bag Thinlits such as this birthday card.
